Project Goals

By studying Iowa history through My Community Connections, students will:

  • Identify the characteristics of a community.
  • Understand ways in which communities express themselves.
  • Learn that there are communities within communities.
  • Identify the places of origin and settlement of Iowa's people.
  • Focus on cities, towns, farms and other communities.
  • Investigate the development and history of selected communities.
  • Compare and contrast Iowa communities.
  • Utilize technology for information research and report generation.
  • Plan a model 21st century Iowa community.
  • Communicate project reports using technology (via computers, videoconferencing, Internet or email).

National Content Standards

My Community Connections addresses national standards for grades 5 through 8 in language arts, social studies, U.S. history and technology. Relevant standards and benchmarks include:
